about

"Como La Rosa" is the second album of the band Salamander, a folk/world music trio based in Gothenburg, Sweden. The album features Jewish folk music, mostly from the Sephardic tradition, combined with early music from the Renaissance and Baroque eras arranged and performed in a folkified style.

Salamander was founded in 2010, and had at first a very broad repertoire reflecting a myriad of folk music traditions from across Europe, the Mediterranean region and Central Asia. The group also performed early music from Antiquity onwards, arranged and performed in a style which drew heavily on inspiration from Nordic, British and Irish folk music.

Over time, Salamander started incorporating more and more Jewish music in their repertoire, mostly from the Sephardic tradition of the Mediterranean region but also to a lesser extent the Ashkenazi tradition of Eastern Europe. The reason for this was partly that the group was captivated by the sheer beauty and raw emotional power of Jewish music. In addition, the fiddle player Jonas Liljeström has partly Jewish ancestry and has been fascinated with Jewish history and culture since an early age, and the vocalist Marita Johansson had also taken a strong interest in Jewish folk song and had added many Sephardic songs to her repertoire. ”Como la Rosa” reflects this development; most of the music on the album is Sephardic, but there is also – for example – a song dating from Renaissance France and a Scottish instrumental piece from the 17th century.

The salamander, to whom the band owes its name, is considered a fire spirit in ancient and medieval symbologies and mystery traditions – one of the four elemental spirits. The Salamander is, among other things, the embodiment of courage and resourcefulness.
