about

Essen Est Zich is a melancholic religious song from the Hasidic tradition. “To eat, drink and sleep comes naturally. What should one do when it doesn’t feel as easy to pray? ”. The song is followed by a klezmer tune called Firn Di Mekhutonim Aheym which comes from the repertory of the Ukrainian born Jewish clarinetist Naftule Brandwein (1884-1963). The title is in Yiddish and translates as “Leading the in-laws home”. The tune is associated with the traditional Ashkenazi Jewish wedding celebration, and in particular the function called ”opfirn di mekhutonim” in which musicians escorted the families of the wedding couple to the ceremony, and then back home again at the end of the celebration. We’ve changed the ending of the tune somewhat compared to Brandwein’s version. Language: Yiddish
