about

Fuggi Fuggi Fuggi – or La Mantovana as it is sometimes called – was composed by Giuseppino Cenci (d. 1616) in the late 16th century. The melody of the song took on a life of its own and became enormously popular and widespread at the time. Variants of it can be found in many different folk song traditions. It has served as the inspiration for the Czech composer Bedřich Smetana’s symphonic poem The Moldau. It also forms the basis for the Israeli national anthem Hatikvah. The lyrics express the complaint of a scorned lover - they ooze with jealous rage. Language: Italian.
